Role - Country Manager - Japan

Location: Tokyo, Japan
Type: Full-time
Languages: Japanese (native) and English (business fluent)

Own the launch and growth of WeirdCo TCGs in Japan. You’ll build the market from the ground up: distribution, hobby stores, organised play, marketing and the local team. This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to build and own the strategy from the ground up.

Weird Co. Values

We presume trust, have each other’s backs, and never compromise on excellence.

You

  • Have launched or run a TCG, hobby game or collectibles business in Japan — at a publisher, distributor or major retailer

  • Know the Japanese hobby channel personally: distributors, card shop chains, independent stores, event organisers

  • Professional self-starter who excels in a chaotic, fast-moving startup

  • Emotionally intelligent, resilient, and thrive on direct feedback

  • Passionate about TCGs — you play, and you understand why Japanese players pick up a new game and why they drop one

What You’ll Do

  • Own the Japan launch plan: timing, product mix, pricing, print quantities and sell-in targets for the Japanese-language edition

  • Select and manage our Japanese distribution partner(s) and negotiate terms

  • Build the hobby store network — recruit stores, get them onto our retail and organised play programs, and keep them stocked and supported

  • Stand up organised play in Japan: store events, pre-releases, regionals, and a national championship path

  • Lead Japan marketing with our global marketing team — content creators, media, conventions and community, localised for Japan rather than translated from English

  • Be the voice of the Japanese market inside WeirdCo on product, localisation, art and rules decisions, and the voice of WeirdCo to Japanese partners

  • Hire and lead the Japan team as the market grows

Application Requirements

  • 5+ years in the Japanese TCG, hobby games or collectibles industry

  • Existing relationships with Japanese TCG distributors and hobby retailers

  • Comfortable owning a budget and being judged on sell-through, store count and active players

  • Based in Tokyo

  • Bilingual Japanese and English preferred

This is a unique opportunity to build something special. If this feels like a dream job to you: please submit your resume and cover letter via our website.

Cover Letter Question: Tell us about your experience with trading card games. What would you do differently from the last TCG launch you watched in Japan?

You'll get an email if you are selected for an interview. Unfortunately, due to the amount of interest, unselected applicants may not receive a response.
